Barrel Ride
You and I should rush and race and boil
across the edge. We'll plunge into the pool
and in that plunging moment leave turmoil,
to find a hiding place, to stash two fools
behind the curtain water. Endless night,
a cave-like shelter from the thundering crush
where cavitation’s grinding dolomite
from sheer escarpment into tawny slush.
Inside that roaring silence we'll embrace,
our pounding hearts, our hypothermic skin, our
bluish lips, each white and shaking face,
our burning love will warm us from within.
The crashing water curtains off our fears,
‘til Erie drains in fifty thousand years.
